Australia vs New Zealand Match Preview
HEAD-TO-HEAD: MATCHES 135, AUSTRALIA 90, NEW ZEALAND 39.
LAST 10 MATCHES: AUSTRALIA 5, NEW ZEALAND 5.
IN THE CHAMPIONS TROPHY: PLAYED 5, AUSTRALIA 4, NEW ZEALAND 0, N/R 1.
One clash that matches the intensity of say an Ashes or an Indo-Pak game is probably Australia vs New Zealand. The Oceania derby has seen some closely fought contests. The infamous underarm match at the MCG ushered in the fire and since then it hasn’t been shelved. New Zealand did regain the Chappell-Hadlee trophy earlier this year, but it’s the sorry defeat at the World Cup finals that’ll haunt them forever. The Champions Trophy however, isn't a bad place to even things up.
New Zealand have entered the top 4, 8 times in the ICC tournaments but have only won the solitary, ICC knockout back in the year 2000. The Kiwis have always produced players who’ve contributed considerably but haven’t yet managed to produce an out-and-out match winner. Brendon McCullum is the only name that comes to mind if you have to list a Kiwi as an ODI-legend. Kane Williamson is certainly on track, but will he inspire the Kiwi squad to challenge one of the tournament favourites?
AUS vs NZ Champions Trophy 2017 PLAYER UPDATE:
Pat Cummins, James Pattinson and John Hastings have earned a call back to the Australian squad. Cummins had spent almost 3 months in the Indian sub-continent, first with the Aussie squad that toured India and with the Delhi Daredevils squad in the Indian Premier League. A rhythmic run up, a bustling approach to the bowling crease and the ability to hit the long ball do make him a priced asset.
John Hastings last played an ODI on 9th October 2016. Having established himself in the Worcestershire county, his experience in the English conditions will only benefit the men in yellow. James Pattinson gets pace and aggression to the line-up, but with Mitchell Start, Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, he will have to wait for his opportunity.
Kane Williamson will be back and leading the kiwi side after missing the tri-nation series in Ireland. Colin Munro who’s known for his destructive hitting will be a name missing from the 15-man kiwi squad. Jimmy Neesham comes back into the squad. The supple all-rounder will work in cohesion with the likes of Colin de Grandhomme and Corey Anderson, for a place in the eleven.
PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR Aus vs NZ match:
David Warner(Australia), Kane Williamson(Australia).
THE GIANT OPENER: Warner and giant used in a sentence forms an oxymoron. When you look at his number from the previous year, the adjective “giant” also seems an understatement. A marauder with sensible flair. That’s Warner for you. Since 01 January 2016, in 28 games Warner’s stacked up 1755 runs at 65 runs per game. HIs strike rate, 106.94., Warner has also scored 9 hundreds during his period. The most by any batsmen in world cricket.
In the matches Australia have won, his average shots up to 75.06. In a competition as intense as this, Warner is their big match player.
THE ELEGANT HITMAN: Oxymorons perhaps is the theme of the day. Willamson is known for his astute composure. Both on and off the field. But what he does brilliantly is kill the bowling attack. If you hurl a 100 mile length delivery, he’ll go back and across, swat a fly and still have the time to middle the ball. Class oozes out when he’s using the willow. Williamson is undoubtedly one of the finest batters in world cricket. The pressure somehow doesn’t appear to dampen his concentration. Kane averages 45.90 in 111 games with 8 hundreds under his belt. It’ll be a cracker of a game at Edgbaston and Williamson will be the key man.
CT 2017 Australia vs New Zealand Match Prediction
NEW ZEALAND OR AUSTRALIA: The Kiwis do have some crafty batsmen, decent all-rounders and some talented operators with the ball in their ranks. Trent Boult is one bowler, the Aussies would want to see the back of. He had demolished their batters in the group stage game in the 2015 World Cup and a 6-for in the recently concluded Chappell-Hadlee trophy.
The Kiwis, somehow, have always been under the radar and that somehow has benefitted them in the ICC tournaments. But in Australia, they have a more assured and a balanced unit. Smith and co are one of the favourites teams to win the title this year and assertively walk in as favourites in this fixture.
